Yorkshire-based The Sleep People saw 27% sales increase within three weeks of joining Temu
Growth enabled new hires and veterans employment program at manufacturer producing 1,400+ mattresses daily
Company now using platform's global reach to prepare first major international expansion
When The Sleep People joined Temu in early 2026, the Yorkshire-based mattress manufacturer was looking for a way to reach customers beyond traditional retail channels. Within three weeks, sales had increased 27% and were enough to hire additional staff and begin planning the company's first significant push into export markets.
Founded in 2014, The Sleep People produces mattresses and bedding under brands including The Foam People, Extreme Comfort, and Starlight Beds. The company's factories manufacture more than 1,400 mattresses daily, generating annual turnover exceeding £20 million. Despite this scale, rising material costs, competition from low-priced imports, and pressure from the UK's cost-of-living crisis had constrained growth opportunities through conventional sales channels.
"We had the production capacity and the quality, but reaching new customers through traditional routes was getting harder," said Mike Worden, 49, managing director of The Sleep People. "Temu gave us access to a much broader base of shoppers."
The platform's customer data has allowed The Sleep People to refine product offerings and identify which ranges resonate in different regions. This insight now informs the company's export strategy. "Temu felt like a partner, it was open, agile, and aligned with how we do business," Worden said.
Temu launched in the UK market in 2023 and opened to local sellers the following year. Thousands of small and medium-sized businesses have since joined, expanding the range available to UK consumers. A 2025 Ipsos study found that more than 80% of UK users on Temu believe the platform delivers good value, with three-quarters likely to recommend it to others. The platform now operates in over 100 markets worldwide.
For The Sleep People, increased revenue has reinforced existing social programs. The company works with disability charities, donates to food banks, and provides mattresses to families experiencing sleep poverty. In 2024 alone, it donated more than 500,000 food items and thousands of mattresses to households in need. Recent sales growth has also enabled a new training and employment initiative for armed forces veterans.
The company plans to expand into premium sleep accessories and sustainable materials, using Temu as the primary channel for both domestic and international sales. "Our goal is to show that British-made products can compete internationally while continuing to support our local communities," Worden said.
